I strive to create websites that people can use easily and intuitively. Websites should be structured and organised in such a way that people don't really have to think in order to use them. Features, such as navigation and search, should work in the manner that people expect them to, so it's important to minimize the possibility of confusing the user in every aspect of the site.
Not all browsers display web pages the same way, or even perform tasks in the same manner, so it's important for a web developer to create websites so that they display nicely and provide similar functionality in each browser, even if it's not identical.
I think that functionality is more important that aesthetics when it comes to web design because if a user can't interact with a website successfully it really doesn't matter how beautiful it looks. However, aesthetic design often enables functions to perform best, so the functions of a website should drive its design in order that users can easily achieve their objectives.
